Checking Rule Change

Current Status of Body Checking…
June 16, 2011

Update: October 3, 2011

On June 11, 2011 USA Hockey changed the age of full body checking (hitting a player without a stick on the puck) from Peewee (12 & under) to Bantam (14 & under).  This rule change will not affect PIHL teams at the Varsity level where body checking will still be allowed.  It is unclear however, how this will affect the Freshmen level team.  Discussions at the June PIHL meeting seemed to favor retaining checking at its previous level.

Contrary to rumors that have been circulating, body contact is not eliminated.  The allowable amount has actually been increased at the Developmental level.  The video below gives a good explanation of what will be allowed next year at the Developmental, Freshmen and Varsity levels.  In addition, full body checking (no stick on the puck) will still be allowed at the Varsity level.  It remains to be seen which direction the Freshmen division will be headed.

Checking will continue at the Freshmen level for the 2011-12 season.

The PIHL is currently discussing eliminating Freshmen level checking for the 2012-13 season.
